Style: Nunc dimittis. Also known as the Song of Simeon or the Canticle of Simeon, is a canticle taken from the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, verses 29 through 32. Its Latin name comes from its incipit, the opening words, of the Vulgate translation of the passage, meaning "Now let depart".
Since the 4th century it has been used in services of evening worship such as Compline, Vespers, and Evensong. Nunc dimittis is found in the liturgical services of many Western Christian denominations, including the Anglican Communion (in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662), also in the service of the Compline of the Roman Church and the Lutheran Church. In the Eastern tradition it's included in the Vesper of the Orthodox Church. It is also sung in the Reformed Churches of the Genevan rite. In Lutheran churches, Nunc dimittis can be sung shortly after receiving the Eucharist.
